About

How do we start creative conversations around off-world community-building?

We invited participants to envision what they would include in a hypothetical “Community in a Box,” a starter kit for sustainable off-world communities. Building thriving interplanetary societies will require our collective knowledge, expertise, creativity and imagination. Our goal was to spark discussions on how we can leverage our existing insights to guide the development of successful interplanetary communities grounded in shared social norms, values and expectations.

Participants from diverse backgrounds were encouraged to think and write for a public audience about their contributions to this “Community in a Box.” We also prompted them to consider the nature of the “box” itself and how its design might influence its long-term value for space explorers.
